  Remembering Martin Luther King Jr.
[by Carlos 11:55 min] Remembering Black History, this past month we celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of struggle and love for humanity. This event, sponsored by the King Chavez coalition for Justice and Unity, took place on January 21, 2008 in the community of Encanto, San Diego, California. On a day that stopped raining to permit some rays to shine... food was shared and Mumia Abu-Jamal's message on this holiday was heard. Together we heard speakers from the unions, the community and then we listened to MLK Jr's speech on Vietnam. Then the event ended with some future events in mind, music and poetry.

It is the first family detention center in the country to be based on the penal model, though plans were quickly made to build more. The T Don Hutto facility holds men, women (some pregnant), children, and infants, none of whom have a criminal past. Administered by the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the country's largest for-profit corrections company, Hutto lacks proper licensing and medical facilities, and has been proven to traumatize families (16.46 mim) web: http://tdonhutto.blogspot.com/

3/19 San Ramon, CA: Nonviolent Direct Action At Chevron Headquarters
[Video by: Ariel López] Video about protest on Chevron headquarters in San Ramon , California after 4 years of war against Iraq and the world. On the morning of March 19th a nonviolent direct action took place at Chevron World Headquarters, 6001 Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon. Protesters demanded an end to Chevron's oil crimes from Richmond to Iraq, saying "No blood for oil! Climate justice now! and Stop war, end empire!" About 100 people participated, from locking themselves to "oil" barrels in order to block one entrance to Chevron's headquarters to participating in street theater. Organizers say, "Chevron poisons local communities from Richmond, to Ecuador and Nigeria. The Chevron refinery in Richmond spews... toxins into the air, water, and land, including cancer-causing dioxins, on the largely African American, South East Asian, and Latino communities. The refinery and plant have had hundreds of accidents, including fires, spills, leaks, explosions, toxic gas releases, flaring, and air contaminations causing severe illness, including asthma and deadly cancers, for the people of Richmond. The people of Richmond are fighting back and demanding that Chevron clean up or get out. We need to imagine a world without Chevron, its oil, and its climate chaos."
